Put safety first with outdoor play activities
21/06/2010 Parents are being reminded of the importance of their child's safety when taking part in outdoor play activities this summer.
The American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) warned that it has seen the number of children experiencing head injuries increase.
However, the number of head injuries sustained by kids while jumping on a trampoline saw a "modest decrease" in 2009 compared to the previous year.
People were reminded to take extra care when their children are playing near water, as running around the water's edge and diving in shallow water cause many injuries.
Dr Gail Rosseau, a Chicago-area neurosurgeon and AANS spokeswoman, said: "By taking a minute or two to use your head, you can help prevent potentially life-altering and tragic consequences."
The Simple Marriages blog recommended recently that parents make sure that they set aside some time each day for outdoor play activities to keep their kids entertained during the summer holidays.
It also recommended creating a calendar of events in advance to take some of the stress out of planning.
