Short bursts of outdoor exercise 'will help weight loss'
18/05/2010 Office workers should fit short bursts of exercising outdoors into their daily routine to keep healthy, one expert has claimed.
Tam Fry, spokesperson for the National Obesity Forum, said that people are leading more sedentary lifestyles as they spend all day behind a desk and their evenings relaxing at home.
The expert explained that this leads to people not having done the "appropriate" level of exercise to burn the calories they're eating, which leads to weight gain.
Mr Fry added: "The exercise that you have to do, and you can choose what exercise you can do, has to be such that you can get sweaty under the arm pits and beads of sweat running down your back."
He added that this can be achieved by spending time exercising outdoors in short bursts, providing that the intensity is right.
The comments follow research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, which suggested that going to the gym has a minimal effect on a person's health if they are sat behind a desk all day.
Those who work in an office are also more likely to suffer weight-related health problems.
