Special school holds fundraiser for trampoline
17/05/2010 A special needs school in Staffordshire held an event this weekend to raise funds to redesign its playground, including the addition of a trampoline.
Merryfields Special School celebrated its 25th anniversary with a pirate themed fun day, attended by former pupils, staff and local residents, This Is Staffordshire reports.
More than £1,000 was raised for the creation of the new facilities, which will include a new playing surface and a sunken trampoline.
In total it is thought that the project will cost £80,000, although much of this will be supplied by savings and a loan.
Sarah Copeland, vice-chairman of the Parents, Teachers and Friends Association, told the news provider : "We've been amazed at the turnout."
US-based website Online Athens reported last week that the use of sensory rooms, including trampolines, has increased in the country in recent years.
Meredith Nettles, who teaches at Rutland, a school for those with special educational needs, said the quieter spaces are important for autistic children, who often have difficulty concentrating in loud and busy rooms.
