Sponsored run raises money for outdoor play equipment
21/06/2010 Children at a school in Devon took part in a fundraising event to raise money for new items of outdoor play equipment.
More than 100 pupils participated in a sponsored run around the field at Sidmouth Infants, the Sidmouth Herald reports.
The group were inspired to take up the challenge after three local marathon runners paid a visit to the school.
Becky Robson and Naomi Garrick, who have both run marathons, helped organise the event in conjunction with members of the Parent, Teacher and Friends Association (PTFA).
PTFA chairperson Janice May told the news provider: "Children ran around the field as long as they wanted to and for finishing each got a medal. We have 106 children and all took part and really enjoyed it."
The benefits of outdoor play activities were highlighted recently in a new study, which suggested that kids that spend their time outside are less likely to waste too much time in front of the TV.
Published in the journal Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study highlighted a "consistent benefit" between participation in sport and screen time.
