Tennis champion says exercising outdoors can reduce breast cancer risk
01/10/2009 Former world number one and four-time grand slam tennis champion Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario has told attendants at a breast cancer event that exercising can reduce the risk of the disease.
Sanchez-Vicario was among the speakers at the launch of the 2009 Europa Donna Breast Health Day in Brussels on Wednesday (September 30th) reports theparliament.com.
Following the launch of the European partnership for action against cancer, the champion was speaking ahead of the 2nd Breast Health Day on October 15th which aims to raise awareness of how lifestyle choices can influence breast health and reduce cancer risk.
Ms Sánchez-Vicario told the news provider: "Everybody has a very busy lifestyle and it is sometimes difficult to find the time to run, walk or go to the gym."
A lack of activity causes between ten and 16 per cent of the 430,000 breast cancer cases diagnosed in Europe each year and Susan Knox, the executive director of Europa Donna, pointed out at the event evidence which showed that 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day is enough to reduce the risk of breast cancer.
