The 'joy of unstructured outdoor play'
18/08/2009 A blogger has been taking a nostalgic look back at playing outdoors, while raising concerns that the joy of such activities could be lost as parents become more scared of letting their children play out.
Writing on grecoromanwellness.wordpress.com, the author said that it was tragic to see generations becoming less active and more sedentary.
They wrote that despite the obvious health concerns of children not playing outside "there is also the loss of the true joy of unstructured, outdoor play".
The blogger then had some serious criticism of parents and the media saying that we lived in a fear based society which has put an end to pure play, where kids, run, jump and fall and then get up and try again.
They gave a word of advice to parents: "Tell your children to go out and play. Show them how. It wasn't so long ago that you rushed home from school only to rush back outside to play."
Last week, councillor Dave Butt, Torbay Council's cabinet member for community services, told Southdevon.co.uk: "Play is vital to a healthy and happy childhood, so we are creating quality outdoor play areas throughout the Bay."
