Trampoline athletes given new challenge

22/03/2010
Trampoline athletes in Scarborough looking for a new challenge will now have the opportunity to join a cheerleading squad.

The First Resort Gymnastics Club already trains youngsters in the area in disciplines such as the trampoline, vaults and beams. It has now started the Falcons cheerleading group to celebrate its third anniversary, the Scarborough Evening News reports.

Head coach Caroline Axham, who has represented the seaside town in national competitions, told the newspaper that the move was a "natural progression" for the group as cheerleading involves many of the same skills of gymnastics such as "tumbling, stunts, jumps and dance".

"We have a great bunch of young adults who attend sessions to work on their conditioning and prime gymnastic moves to help them with their other hobbies," she explained.

Last week it was announced that around 20 trampoline athletes will be representing Great Britain in seven different disciplines in the 22nd European Trampoline Championships.

The event takes place in Varna, Bulgaria, between April 20th and 24th.
