Trampoline exercise 'may benefit brain function'
29/04/2010 Regularly taking part in aerobic exercise, such as jumping on a trampoline, can help improve brain function, a new study suggests.
The research, lead by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and published in the journal Neuroscience, was carried out on primates, however it is believed the results can be applied to humans, escience news reports.
Dr Judy Cameron, a psychiatry professor at Pitt School of Medicine and a senior scientist at the Oregon National Primate Research Center, said that the monkeys who took part in regular exercise had an increased ability to learn.
"We found that monkeys who exercised regularly at an intensity that would improve fitness in middle-aged people learned to do tests of cognitive function faster and had greater blood volume in the brain's motor cortex than their sedentary counterparts," she explained.
Dr Cameron concluded that the study proves that regularly taking part in regular exercise, like jumping on a trampoline, has many positive effects on the body.
Gentle trampoline exercise was also recently recommended for more mature people by the Strength Training for Older People blog.
