Trampoline inventor George Nissan dies
12/04/2010 The man responsible for inventing the modern trampoline has died.
George Nissan passed away in San Diego, California on April 7th aged 96. Mr Nissan, along with his coach Larry Griswold, has been credited with the creation of the modern trampoline in 1934.
It is thought that they got the idea having seen the way trapeze artists rebounded on a safety net at the circus.
USA Gymnastic reports that he set up his first company Griswold Nissen Trampoline and Tumbling Co. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1941 and went on to establish the US Tumbling and Trampoline Association in the 1970s.
Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics, said: "His vision, innovations and passion sowed the seeds for trampolines worldwide popularity today. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."
Trampoline events were included in the Olympic Games for the first time in Sydney in 2000.
Laura Gallagher, a British trampoline athlete, told the Independent recently that the London games in 2012 will help inspire both athletes and children to get involved in the sport in the UK.
