Trampoline news: BUCS gets extra funding
12/03/2010 British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS), which introduced trampoline events at its championship for the first time this year, has been given £10 million of lottery funding.
The national governing body for higher education sport in the UK was awarded the money to get more students involved in playing sport. Currently, fewer than three in ten university students take part in physical activity regularly.
Karen Rothery, chief executive of BUCS, said that the financing was a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for university sport".
"Not only will the funding support new activities, it will also help to increase volunteers, officials and coaches which are key to sustaining student participation," she explained.
Ms Rothery added that getting young people involved in sport will help them to develop healthy habits for life.
Student athletes from across the UK are currently taking part in the BUCS Championships in Sheffield. Over 6,000 people are expected to compete with trampoline athletes being able to take part in the event for the first time.
