Trampoline success for Canadian
31/07/2009 A gymnast looks set to have claimed his spot in the Canadian team for the World Championships in the autumn after winning two events in qualifying this week, during which he broke a record.
Alex Seifert of Red Deer, Alta, posted victories in tumbling and double mini trampoline on Wednesday at the Canada Cup competition.
The meet was the last of three qualification events ahead of the trampoline and tumbling world championships in St Petersburg, Russia.
In tumbling, Seifert earned 135.20 points, edging his Calgary Gymnastics clubmate Chris Melemenis who earned 125.10. In double mini trampoline, Seifert prevailed again with a 143.30 score followed by Luke Friesen of Kelowna, B.C., in second at 141.00 and Tony Doles of the US, in third at 139.60.
"It was a great competition for me," said Seifert, who competed last week at the World Games in Taiwan.
"In double mini, I executed a routine with a very high degree of difficulty and in tumbling I completed a pass that had never been done by a Canadian."
The games this autumn will be the 26th Trampoline World Championships. The first was held in London in 1964.
