Trampolines 'can boost social development in children'
21/10/2010 The founder of an Oxfordshire trampoline club has urged the government not to cut spending on sport activities for children, naming social development among the many benefits of outdoor play.
Fiona Middleton, who runs the Higher Energy Trampoline Club, which now has a total of seven locations across the county, told the Witney Gazette that 'grass roots' sports spending needed to be immune from cuts.
She argued that without public funding, sporting opportunities and outdoor play activities for young people in Oxfordshire would be devastated.
"Sport plays a massive part in social development. It develops team building and our club is like a family now. We can’t cut spending at grass roots level," Ms Middleton asserted.
Meanwhile, councillors in the Ealing borough of London have recognised the benefits of outdoor play, offering a number of special courses to keep children occupied during the half term holiday.
Trampolines, mini tennis and football are just some of the fun activities planned, which the council hope will encourage more children to start exercising outdoors.
