Trampolines 'stimulate children with autism'
28/06/2010 Children with autism don't have to feel isolated from their peers and steps can be taken to ensure they make friends more easily.
Writing for Psychology Today, Robbie Wolvier said that parents should make the effort to invite their autistic child's classmates to their house, as items of equipment found in sensory rooms like trampolines often prove popular.
"Don't be surprised if your child becomes the classroom celebrity, and you start getting a rush of invitations, especially if you have a sensory room...unique autism-friendly toys or special equipment like a trampoline or swing," Mr Wolvier explained.
He added that these type of toys "help stimulate your child and will appeal to his classmates".
Mr Wolvier said that these 'playdates' should be supervised at all times and should be kept short at first until a friendship is properly established.
An anonymous blogger writing for Autisable recently said that after purchasing a mini trampoline they saw significant improvements in the autism symptoms that their daughter experienced.
The writer said that in a few days she started making eye contact and had improved social interaction.
