Trampolines and other 'fun' sports becoming popular in schools
15/10/2009 'Fun' sporting activities such as exercising on a trampoline, cheerleading and circus skills are becoming more prevalent in schools, according to new research.
A study by Ofsted highlights that over half of secondary schools and 32 per cent of schools overall offer cheerleading while one in five have trampolining as a sports option.
Other 'fun' sports gaining popularity include yoga, juggling, skateboarding and angling.
The study has garnered criticism from some quarters, with commentators suggesting that the rise of such sports is leading to a declining interest in traditional activities such as cricket and is resulting in fewer youngsters taking part in competitive sports.
However, minister for children, schools and families Iain Wright said: "Thanks to our national PE and Sport Strategy for Young People and world class investment, school and youth sport has never been so well funded or enjoyed by young people."
The study also showed that over half of children are taking part in at least three hours a week of sport.
Using a trampoline for exercise is widely regarded as a great way to get fit and also helps improve coordination and muscle tone.
