Trampolines bring outdoor play to nursery in County Durham
21/03/2011 Youngsters in the north east of England are said to be jumping for joy after their nursery received £200 worth of new outdoor play activities, including a trampoline and sports equipment to get them exercising outdoors.
According to the Advertiser, hula hoops, brightly-coloured balls and a trampoline were among the many items delivered to Timothy Hackworth Primary School's nursery, in Shildon, courtesy of Haven Holidays.
The centre's spokeswoman told the newspaper that children had so far been particularly excited about the trampoline, which she hoped would see the youngsters spend more time having fun and exercising outdoors.
"Some of it can be used indoors but it is lovely to be able to spread items outside. They are really appreciative of it," she said.
Last week, Jim McKenna, professor of sport at Leeds Metropolitan University, suggested that childhood obesity could be reduced – and academic performance improved – with greater use of outdoor play activities.
