Trampolines get a 'retro-cising' boost
28/10/2009 Following the resurgence of Fame the Musical, retro-cising is the new sexy way to lose weight.
Frame dance and fitness studio in Shorditch, east London has four nostalgia-inspired classes: Dirty Dancing, Eighties aerobics, Jane Fonda Tribute and Rebounding (which involves mini-trampolines), reports the London Evening Standard.
Mini-trampolines, or rebounders, are enjoying a renaissance.
When Nasa released a study in 1980 that said "rebound exercise is the most efficient, effective form of exercise yet devised by man", sales rocketed.
Michele Wilburn, founder and owner of Starbound Enterprise, which sells rebounders and their workout DVDs, discovered the form of trampoline on a visit to New Zealand.
"I've seen tests that have proved that it makes your heart work harder for less effort and that ten minutes on a rebounder is equivalent to 30 minutes' jogging," she told the news provider.
Wilburn has seen sales grow in the past five years. "When David Beckham broke his toe and his manager put him on a rebounder to rehabilitate, we were flooded with orders," she added.
Trampoline coach for British Gymnastics Anne-Sonia King recently told the Press Association: "I would definitely recommend trampolining as it increases strength and fitness of the muscles."
