Trampolines recommended as a form of weight-bearing exercise
14/12/2009 Trampolines have been named as one of the pieces of equipment used for the weight-bearing exercises that help people burn fat, by a five time Olympic gold medallist.
Writing in the Chicago Tribune, Eric Heiden, an orthopaedic surgeon and former speed skater, said it was a common misconception that weight lifting was the only weight bearing exercise that would aid weight loss.
He said: "When most people think about weightlifting, they picture doing bench presses at a gym with a bunch of muscle heads. The truth is weight-bearing exercise encompasses various activities, including... impact activities such as jumping rope, dance [and] trampoline."
Some of the benefits named were lean body mass and higher metabolism, and an increase in bone and muscle strength. On top of these trampolines offer a number of other benefits including increased balance and co ordination.
Dr Heiden also gave a number of recommendations to ensure that people stay safe while performing their exercise routine.
He suggested progressing slowly with the amount of repetitions you do, coupling weight bearing activities with core exercises, such as yoga, and finishing before you feel like you cannot do any more.
