Trampolines to help tackle rising obesity?
17/02/2011 A medical expert has said that children require the right tools if they are to lead healthier lifestyles and avoid becoming obese, which may encourage more parents to buy trampolines for the garden.
Figures published by the government this week revealed that obesity-related deaths in Britain had increased by more than 40 per cent since 2004.
Dr Dean Marshall, from the British Medical Association, urged families to embrace good eating habits and look at ways of exercising outdoors, which could include the use of garden trampolines.
"Prevention is much better than cure. It is better, healthier and safer if children are given the tools to manage their weight, eat healthily and take more exercise," he added.
Earlier this week, exercise and nutrition consultant Alan Gordon said that, while they may be eager to start burning calories with garden trampolines, those with more weight to lose need to adequately prepare.
He explained that the overweight and obese were generally more likely to have "poor core muscles" and could potentially suffer injuries if they failed to warm up before exercising outdoors on the trampoline.
