Use of trampoline sensory rooms increases
12/05/2010 An increasingly number of schools in the US are switching on to the benefits of sensory rooms, which often include trampolines.
Features of these rooms include light and movement toys, which are intended to calm autistic children and help them concentrate better in class, US-based website Online Athens reports.
Meredith Nettles, who teaches at Rutland, a school for those with special educational needs, said that sensory rooms are important for autistic children, who often have issues with loud and busy atmospheres.
"It makes it so much easier for them to be focused when we go back into the classroom, because we have a separate space we can use outside of the classroom to de-escalate and expend some of that excess energy," she explained.
Trampolines are known to have many benefits for autistic children, as they improve balance and spatial awareness.
Dr Linda Voss, coordinator of the EarlyBird Diabetes Study, also recently highlighted the importance of encouraging children to exercise outdoors.
She explained that this will help kids develop healthy habits for life.
