World Cup 'should inspire Brits to start exercising outdoors'
03/06/2010 Football fanatics should use the World Cup to start exercising outdoors and kick start a new healthier lifestyle, one expert has suggested.
Ron Maughan, professor of sport and exercise nutrition at Loughborough University, said that Brits should use the sportsmen currently in South Africa as inspiration and resist the temptation to drink alcohol and eat junk food during the World Cup.
The expert said that the "ideal would be just a moderate amount of exercise 30 to 60 minutes, three or five times per week".
He added that by taking exercising outdoors more seriously, as they do in Australia and South Africa, England could improve its chances on the international stage.
The comments come after a survey by the University of Loughborough found that one in ten football fans will consume 20 pints and 20 cans of beer throughout the tournament.
A further ten per cent admitted that they were likely to indulge in take-away meals while watching the games, with many eating crisps, biscuits and chocolate as snacks.
