Youngsters enjoy benefits of outdoor play in Coventry
22/11/2010 An early learning centre has been officially opened in the West Midlands, following a £1 million investment in outdoor play activities to help youngsters feel the benefits of exercising in the open air.
The Early Years Foundation Centre, at the city's King Henry VIII Preparatory School, in Coventry, offers almost 100 nursery and reception children the chance to enjoy outdoor play games, the Coventry Telegraph reported.
Head teacher Nicholas Lovell told the newspaper that it had taken five years to make the school's dream of creating new outdoor play activities a reality.
"The intention was to create a beautiful and fantastic facility for children to start their education because we think it is key to their success later on for their early foundations to be set correctly," he added.
Writing for the Yorkshire Post last week, Ryan Shorthouse discussed his own childhood experiences, comparing them to the lifestyles of modern-day youngsters.
He stressed the importance of using outdoor play games to encourage children to take an active interest in nature, wildlife and regular exercise.
