Youth group wins award for outdoor play activities
16/03/2011 A team of youths representing younger patients at Cambridge's Addenbrooke's Hospital have won an award for bringing a range of outdoor play activities to the garden of a children's ward.
CambridgeFirst reported how youngsters making up the patient group Active were handed the Youth Bank prize for Cambridge, following their transformation of the popular play area that adjoins the hospital's D2 wing.
Among the outdoor play activities installed are a giant chess board, teenage shelter and a climbing frame to encourage exercising outdoors, allowing young patients to feel the benefits of outdoor play in a safe environment.
"The youngsters worked with local landscape designer Lesley Dickinson and the hospital's estates team to turn their bold ideas into reality," the news source reported.
Earlier this week, Sarah Knight, of Anglia Ruskin University, told Education Executive that adventurous outdoor play was essential to children's early years development.
One way in which parents can help their little ones enjoy exercising outdoors at home is to invest in trampolines for the garden, which can be fitted with trampoline safety nets for added peace of mind.
